The Trouble With Fred

The life of a Syrian Immigrant has its unique challenges for a young boy, but add in a sociopathic brother who just tried to kill him and a gang of rowdy kids showing up on his doorstep, Iman's life is certainly far from normal.

Iman's recount of his childhood explores a dysfunctional family's roots and finding safety from those bitter feelings by overcoming adversity, as well as social and environmental challenges.

The story paints the picture of the delicate intricacies of troubled familial relationships, as well as the risks that can come from chancy street life. His connection to his mother, his brother Fred, whom he's sure is a sociopath, and what has led them down a road of despair and bitterness comes together to illustrate the life of troubled youth.

Mixed with humor and disturbing details, The Trouble with Fred: The True Story of the Cook Street Gang is Iman's debut memoir and coming-of-age story.
