The Candal cruiser Meran was last seen weeks ago near the remote outpost of Ryt and is missing. Ships sent to investigate are attacked and return to base with casualties. Desperate, Senior Captain Clay summons an old friend, Captain Luke Bret, to lead the next, possibly last, attempt.
Bret's last mission was considered a success despite heavy losses. He left ship command to become a college professor shortly after. Clay uses Bret's friendship with the missing captain to persuade him to accept a 30-day deployment.
An unknown intruder attacks unmanned outposts and removes their contents. Unlike mercenaries and raiders, these adversaries have advanced ships. After defending a Mekal ship, their main competitor, Bret, forges a temporary truce with a long-term adversary.
The intruder, the Carina cruiser Cailin, has been stranded in their star system for two years. A stellar event sent them there during their subnet exit. The Carina portal is currently unavailable, and they cannot determine their planet's fate. Desperate, they have resorted to attacking remote outposts to seize military supplies.
